Ingredients

Instructions

  1. To a 2 quart saucepan, add sugar, and water, and stir to combine. Over medium-high heat, continuously stir until sugar is dissolved, and bring to a boil.
  2. Once at a boil, remove from heat, and immediately add organic dried hibiscus flowers, stir, cover, and steep for only 10-12 minutes (see Note #2).
  3. Double strain (see Note #3) through an extra fine mesh strainer over a large measuring cup (2 cup), gently pressing flowers to extract remaining syrup. Discard hibiscus flowers. Cool syrup completely. Then using a small funnel, transfer syrup into an airtight glass bottle (12 ounce), and store refrigerated for up to 3 weeks.

Notes

  1. I recommend using Anthony's organic dried hibiscus flowers. It’s great quality, organic, reasonably priced for a 1 pound bag (find it on Amazon).
  2. Hibiscus flowers steep fairly quickly and if left too long while steeping, the syrup will become bitter. If you prefer a deeper color and more tartness in your simple syrup, let it steep for up to 15 minutes (but no longer), and strain immediately to prevent any bitterness.
  3. Double straining works best if you use two measuring cups instead of bowls. It’s much easier to pour without spilling.
  4. Makes approximately 1 ½ cups (12 ounces). A total of 24 servings (1 tablespoon per serving).

How to Make this Easy, 3-Ingredient Recipe for Hibiscus Simple Syrup!

Blog Comments & Tips

Homemade Hibiscus Simple Syrup is as Easy as it Gets!

If you love adding a little something special to your drinks, this Hibiscus Simple Syrup is an easy recipe to keep on hand. Made with just dried hibiscus flowers, sugar, and water, this homemade syrup has a gorgeous ruby-red color and a bright, floral flavor with a naturally tart finish.

Hibiscus flowers, or rather the hibiscus calyces, are commonly used to make teas and refreshing beverages around the world. The calyces are small, colorful, fleshy, leaf-like structures at the base of a flower that protect the flower bud before it opens. Once the flower dies, the colorful calyces are left behind to be used for tea and other wonderful recipes. When steeped, the flowers release their deep crimson color and distinctive tangy flavor, making them especially delicious when balanced with a touch of sweetness.

This simple syrup is incredibly versatile. Stir it into lemonade, iced tea, sparkling water, cocktails, or mocktails, or drizzle it over desserts for a beautiful pop of color and flavor. It’s also the most important ingredient for creating my vibrant Hibiscus Lemonade recipe.

Once you make a batch, you may find yourself looking for all kinds of delicious ways to use it. A little hibiscus syrup can turn an everyday drink into something wonderfully bright, floral, and refreshing.

How do you ensure the best results from this recipe?

My 3 tips to making the best Hibiscus Simple Syrup:

  1. Use organic dried hibiscus flowers. I enjoy using these brands: Anthony's organic hibiscus flowers or U.S. Wellness Naturals Hibiscus organic hibiscus flowers.

  2. Stir sugar and water continuously until sugar dissolves.

  3. Timing is everything, or this syrup can turn bitter if left to steep too long. Have your timer ready. Once the sugar and water mixture come to a full boil, remove from heat, add the hibiscus flowers, and set timer. Then strain immediately after the timer rings.

Footnote: Remember to remove from heat and set your timer for the exact steep time. Then strain immediately once timer rings.
